A PLUCKY OLD LADY
GRAPPLES WITH A BURGLAR, By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 25. James Ridling, who roserved his defence, was committed for'trial at Pukekohe to-day on a charge of burglary on January 12. Mrs. Leach deposed' that she retired about 11 p.m., and later heard six knocks on the front door. Then the kitchen window was smashed, and a man entered her bedroom. He sat on the floor and slid towards her. She jumped out of bed and caught up a knife. The man sprang at hear and caught her hands. They struggled together, and, becoming exhausted, she stabbed her assailant through the hand. He fled from the bedroom, and she followed him. opened the door, and drove him out. Her age was seventy-eight in Juno last. She was living alone.
