TRAINING OF MOTORMEN

SUSPENSION OF ACT ASKED FOR

The Tramways Committee reported to the City Council last evening that for some time past they have been in communication with the Hon. the Minister of Public Works with a view to obtaining, owing to a serious shortage of motormeii, the suspension of certain clauses in the Tramways Amendment Act, 1910, which stipulate a twelve months' service Qualification for conductors before they bo promoted to motormen. The Minister recently called a conference of representatives of tramway undertakings similarly affected, and has consulted the tramway unions on the matter. Up to the present, however, no reply lias boon received, indicating that the Minister is taking any action with respect to same.
