SOLDIERS V. WAIRARAPA. Tho return match between the above teams was played on November 22 at Carterton, tho Soldiers (Featherston Camp) winning by the narrow margin of one game. The matoh was robbed of a certain amount of interest as neither side was able to muster some of its best talent. Messrs. Severne and Cuniberworth, of Christchurch', and Ewen (Auckland) were amongst, those who wero unablo to get leave of absence from camp, whilst the Wairarapa team, which generously provided its opponents with four substitutes, was minus the services of the Kummers and Connell, jun. The championship of the Auckland Chess Club has been won by Mr. J. C. Qrierson, who tied with last year's winner, Mr. Pickett, and beat him in the play-off, winning both games. During the past two decades Mr. Grierson has won the Auckland championship ten times, and been runner-up seven times. He held the New Zealand championship in 1903, and again in 1913, tho only two occasions that the Dominion championship has gone to a Queen City representative.
