COMPULSORY ENLISTMENT

PROGRESS OF THE WORE. The work connected' with the com" pulsory enlistment scheme continues to grow, and the Recruiting Branch, which is under the direction of the AdjutantGeneral, is about to move into new" quarters in a City huiiding. The branch' began its operations in a room hi the Headquartors building at Mount Cook, and was transferred last week, owing to the pressing need for additional space, to the Buckle Street Barracks. The accommodation there has proved insufficient, and larger quarters had to be found. The staff, which could sib round_ a table a few weeks ago, now comprises more than fifty persons, and! is still growing. Tho number includes Bome volunteer workers who have undertaken clerical duties. The "Gazette" published last Thursday containing the names of the Reservists who had been selected by ballot for service with the Expeditionary, Force, had on its final page a supple- 1 mentary list of men who had been removed from the main lists during the official scrutiny. "In addition to the Reservists called up above," ran a note, "the following names were included in the certified list of the men selected by lot, but as it was found tbat tliefl are already members of the Expeditionary Force, or are dead, their names have been omitted from the list of thosal called up for service." Reports fromi various quarters are showing that tha scrutiny did not discover all the names that should have been included in thin supplementary list. The margin of error is believed to he very small, and cases are being noted by the authorities as they arise. Reservists who have been summoned in consequence of the ballot are asking, in some instances, wliat they should do next. They need not do anything at all until they receive instructions from. the Defence authorities. The# may use the appeal form enclosed in; the formal notice forwarded them by; the Department. If they do not intend to appeal, they have merely tof wait until they receive notice to appear before a Medical Board for examina-" tion. Then, if they are passed lit, they, will be advised when they will be required to enter'camp. Dates havo noS been fixed yet, but the recniits may* be sure that they will receive notice of each step they are required to take.
