Inspector M'Kinnon is acting as Inspector, and Sergeant Emerson as SubInspector. • News has been received of the death at Buenos Aires of Mr. Phillip E. Davies, British Vice-Consul at Buenos Aires, and son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. John Prouse, of this city. Mrs. Davies (nee Miss Florence Prouse) is returning to New Zealand shortly. The late Mr. Davies, who had been suffering from a complication for the past eighteen months, was a brother of Miss Mary Davies, a very distinguished English balladist, and Miss Gwen Davies, who visited Wellington in the same capacity many years ago. Mrs. Davies is also a, musician of good standing. Before she was married she toured Australia and New Zealand as accompanist for Madame Antonio Dolores. Sirs. Daviea has no family. Lieutenant G. M. Spence, late adjutant and quartermaster of the hospital ship Marama, lias been gazetted to the rank of captain as from August 15. Captain Spenoe is a son of the Rev. G. AV. J. Spence, formerly superintending minister of the Auckland East Methodist Circuit. Sergt. J. E. Given, recently reported as killed in action, was born in the South Island, and removed to Wellington, where he was a member of the late City Rifles for some years. On leaving that company he joined the Wellington Suburbs Rifle Club, and was one of the club's team in 1913, when the Suburbs won the Service Championship Aggregate at the Dominion Sleeting at Trentham. Later. Sergt. Given joined the Okawa Rifle Club, of which club lie was a member up to the time of his death in France. Sergt. Given represented Hawke's Bay as a sniper. Tho funeral of the late Mrs. Anne Maguirc took place yesterday afternoon. The servico at the graveside at Karori was conducted hy the Rev. Mr. Askew, of St. Mark's Church. Those present included the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), Messrs. J. R. Palmer (Town Clerk), R-, Tail* (chief clerk), James Ames (City Valuer), Robert Hannah. Hamilton Gilmer, James M'Ken zip, Maurice O'Connor, and Thomas Madden. Mr. and Mrs. Len. M'Konzie have received many tokens of sympathy in their bereavement. Mr. Herbert Gregory, who is physical director at the Y.M.C.A. at Petrograd, Russia, is expected to arrive in New Zealand shortly on a visit to his brother, Mr. W.'H. Gregory, at Milton, Otago. Lieutenant-Colonel P. R. Cook, who returned with the Marama, lias, says our Masterton correspondent, been appointed to succeed Major Gunn as principal medical officer at Featherston Camp. It was reported to the Presbyterian Assembly last evening that the following Presbyterian chaplains were, during tho year, appointed by the Defence Department for service abroad: — Rev. J. AY. Shaw, M.A., to hospital' ship Maheno; Rev. D. Dutton, to hospital ship Marama ; and Rev. A. Hardie, Rev. H; Clark, Rev. AV. R. Hutchison, Rev. N. 0. White, Rev. J. D. Wilson, Rev. D. C. Herron, M.A., Rev. R. 'Watson, M.A., to the Expeditionary Forces A movement is on foot to recognise tho devotiou of Mr. W. T. Grundy to the interests of the Clyde Quay School and his efforts ill the cause of education iu the district. Mr. Grundy has been headmaster of the school for_t.be last 28 years, and is about to -retire. The school committee decided last night to call a meeting of residents during the week to consider the matter. Sergt. John Nicholson, of the Headquarters Staff, Records Office, died in the Featherston Camp Hospital on Saturday evening from bronchial pneumonia. He had beou ill for some days. Siguor Rodolfo Gonsalez, director of tho Gonsalez Italian Grand Opera Co., mines of a fighting stock. Ho lias transmitted this trait in his character to his family, for two of his sons are at present with the Italian Army at the front, where by latest advices they were in the thick of tho fighting.
