MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. For insobriety two first offenders were convicted and discharged. Maud Grant, against whom there was one •previous conviction, was fined -.10s.,- in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Lynda O'Connor, an old offender, was on the application of tho police, committed to the Pakatoa Inebriates' Home. "•She is homeless .and penniless, and no charitable institution will take her in," was the.statement of Inspector Hendrey, when refering ■to Mary Wakelan, who charged with being an idle and disorderly person, in that she had insufficient means of support. She was sent to gaol for 14. days. Edward Sandbrook was charged that on November 15 he did obtain by fraud a meal, valued at Is. 6d., at a restaurant. Inspector Hendrey 6aid the case was an indictable one, but it was a trivial one to send to the Supreme Court, and as the man had already been punished, he would withdraw the charge if Sandbrook paid the cost of tho meal. The Magistrate gave his consent to this course being adopted. Gershoum Simmons, a West Indian, appeared on remand charged with assaulting so as to cause actual bodily-harm.-.Tolin Marshall and Reginald Pierre. Mr. H. P. O'Leary appeared for the accuseil. The main facts of the case have already been published. Yesterday Dr.' Henry described the wounds inflicted on Srarshall and Pierre, the wounds on the former were the more serious, but they were not immediately dangerous. John Marshall and Reginald Pierro • were also placed in the witness box. The trouble arose in tho forecastle of the Kaikoura on Saturday evening, October 14. Simmons was in' bis bunk when -Marshall, Pierre and other; sailors came on board. The noise they made thus disturbing those in their bnnks was the prime causa of the trouble. Tho accused, who reserved his' defence,' was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in £25. and- one surety of .£25. George Golding, town traveller and collector for Laery and Co., Ltd., was charged with having received the Siiin of 4!64 lis. Gil., in money, on terms requiring him to account for same to Laery and Co., Ltd. Sub-Inspector MUinnon conducted the nrosecution. and Mr. Dickson appeared .for accnsed. Tho accused pleaded guilty and'was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. A CIIAEGB .DISMISSED. 'By Telegraph—Prcse Association. The jury -returned-a verdict of not guilty, and accused was-discharged-.
