THE SARGEANT BEQUEST
♦ " ] MAYOR OF WANGANUI EXPLAINS j POSITION. '■' ] The reference in our issue of Wed- ; nesday as to the Sargeant Bequest is ' taken exception to.by the Mayor of Wanganui (Mr. 0. E. Mackay.) as containing an unjust aspersion on the Borough. Council. The delay which has taken place in awarding the prize for the design favoured for the Art Gallery building is due to a doubt having arisen as to whether the conditions of the-i competition have been complied with by. the architect who:sent in the design. The question, Mr. Mackay states, is a very delicate one, and is still under consideration by.the council. From the particulars supplied by Mr. Mackay it is quite clear that the Borough Council has been placed in a difficult position in being called on to decide the very unusual issue that has arisen in connection with the competition.
