WHEN THE TIME COMES
CORPORATION WILL EMPLOY WOMEN. The Reserves Committee reported to the City Council last evening that they had received a letter from the Women's National Reserve of New Zealand (Wellington Branch) offering" to supply women for work in the City Reserve, and the offer had been carefully considered. The committeo recommended that the Women's Reserve should be informed that there } are ample men in the Reserves Department who are able to carry on the work at present, and who are ineligible for military service for some time • to come. • Councillor W. H. P. Barber disagreed with the committee's attitude, but modified his views somewhat onlearning that tho proposition was that the women should be paid for the work. He had at first thought it was a proposal to do the work "voluntarily ~ f • -■■ Councillor R. A. Wright said that the committee appi'eciated tho offer of the women, but it had to be remembered that the mon whom it was suggested might be released for other work were trained gardeners. When the timo came for married mon to go to the war, and they were adequately paid for doing so, the suggestion of the Women's Reserve would be all right. The Mayor said that when the proper lime came the council would not hesitate to oaploy women in the lines to which they are suited. But the time had not arrived yet. Councillor Frost (chairman of the Reserves Committee) said tho position was as stated by the Mayor. On the suggestion of Councillor J. TTutclieson, it was resolved to thank tlio Women's Reserve for their offer.
