TOTALISATOR PERMITS
WELLINGTON TROTTING CLUB'S
CASE. 'An appeal to the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. G. W. Russell) was made by the Wellington Trotting Club yesterday for better consideration in the matter of totalisator privileges. Mr. E. Riddiford, president of the club, was the only speaker. He pointed: out that the Trotting Club ■had only one day's permit. Dunedm had six days, Auckland 11 days, and Christehurch- 17 days, and V. elliugton considere<l that it should have better treatment. Not many years ago the club had permits for eight days racing, but the number had been reduced toone. The club, he pointed out, had secured a long lease of the course at Htttt Park, and had already spent £1200 on preliminary improvements, which were a direct benefit to the people of the district. , The [Minister, in replying, said that the fact that such a large number of men had waited 'on him was a clear indication of the fact that trotting as a. sport was going to get a fresh start in Wellington. Ho sympathised with the deputation in the arguments it had put, forward, but he bad to point out that permits for the present year had already been allocated on the Tecommendaiton of the, conference. If there should, he .any break in connection-with any other club not being able to u«a its license- he would be prepared - to consider the question of giving Wellington another day s racing. Otherwise nothing could be done until next; season., when, the question of adjustment in favour of Wellington would naturally have ,to be considered.
