PRESENTATION TO MR. N. E, BURTON
At the Hotel Cecil on Saturday even* ing £he literary staff and representatives of other departments of Thh Dominion tendered a farewell dinner to Mr. Norman 6. Burton, jvho is retiring from tlio assistant-editorship of the paper. Mr. Burton was a member of the original Dominion staff, and_ foij some years filled the chief sub-editor's chair. The best of health has not been his lot of late, and bis intention is to reside in Auckland.
Mr. C. Earle, Editor and Managing Director, ivho presided at the gathering, on behalf of the'staff, presented Mr. Burton with gifts for himself and Mrs. Burton, and also a cheque for a. substantial amount from the Board of Directors of the Company. In making the presentation, Mr. Earle spoke most'highly of the services Mr. Burton had Tendered .the paper during his years of service since its inception, and made special reference to the sincere affection the guest of the evening had inspired in the hearts of all "his colleagues and associates on the paj>er. Mr. Burton had not only proved himself a sound and capable journalist, vrho had done great work for his paper, but his personality had exerted an' influence in times of stress and trouble which had won the respect and admiration of all. To him,'' Mr. Burton's departure meant the severance of ties of the pleasantest nature, and be and all other members of the staff) felt it as a great personal loss. Messrs. W. Todd, Foreman Printer, A., Sando, Managor, C. G. Weston, Cliief Sub-Editor, C. J. M'Kinnon, Cable Sub-Editor, and A. N. Francis, Secretary and Accountant, also eulogfeed Mr. Burton's work on the paper, and remarked on the high personal esteem 'in which he was held throughout the whole establishment.
Mr. Earle read a letter from Mr. James Macintosh. Chairman of Directors, regretting his inability to bo present, and expressing the high appreciation- of the Directors of the Company of Mr. Burton's services, and Regret that ill-health should have rendered it necessary for liTm to sever what had been so pleasant an association. He enclosed a cheque from the 'company, with the best wishes for a speedy restoration to health.
Mr. Burton, in acknowledging tho gifts and good wishes, said his associations with The Dominion hao_ been amongst the pleasantest of' his lifo. He was leaving the staff with regrets.
and would never forget the_ kindly sentiments expressed that night nor the good comrades ho was parting from.
Songs and gramophone selections (records kindly lent for the occasion by the Bristol Piano Co.) filled in a very; pleasant evening. Cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Bur tort closed the proceedings.
