THE CALL FOR MEN
' NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER DRAFTS. Voluntary recruiting for the Twentythird and Twenty-fourth Reinforcements is to close this evening, in accordance with the announcement made last week by the Recruiting Boaid. The extent of the shortages for the two drafts will then be ascertained and a ballot will be taken, probably later in the wesk, for the purpose of selecting from among the members of the First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve sufficient recruits to fill the drafts.
Reports from the military districts received at Defence Headquarters on: Saturday showed that tho number of men .attested, for the Twenty-third Reinforcements was 1469. The required strength of the draft .is- 2385, so that there was an apparent shortage of 916 mea. This shortage will be reduced to Eome extent by enlistments on Saturday and to-day. The shortage m the recruits set down for the Twentyfourth Reinforcements up till Saturday was reported to be 839, there being 1162 men enlisted, against 2001 required. The shortage on tho two drafts amounted/ therefore, to 1755, subject to some reduction on Saturday and toRecruiting Board is not likely to bo in possession of exact information regarding the position, after the closing of voluntary limiting for the two drafts, until to-morrow or on Wednesday. Apparently it will not be necessary to ballot for sufficient men to cover the whole of the shortage in any case, sincp a certain number of rocruits mil be obtained through the ° f Clause 35 of tho Military Service Act.
