THE TURF
TARATAHI-CARTERTON RACES CUP WON BY BED RIBBON. The weather at Clarevillo yesterday was glorious, and a big crowd gathered to witness t'ho racing. The morning train l'rom Wellington was well patrunised. The machine handled t CJ2,3'll, as against JiOl'JO last year. The scratching Jion was freely used during tho (lay, anu .most of tho runners competed twice. In two instances horses did better at tlieir second attempt. Theso.wero Hylami and Sir Agnes. None of tho finishes wero very close, and several hot favourites wero beaten during the day. The scratchings wero numerous in tho Trial Plate, nino horses going to the post. Hylarni was a good faVourite, and was unlucky to lose. Sarbonite played up at the barrier, and delayed tho start. Ho got out in front * when the tapes were skied, and was attended by Zimmiere and Montalvo.to tho turn. Hero the leader compounded, and Pall Mall and Hylami moved up. Altercation came through in the straight and won easily from Pall Mall, with Hylami, who was last away, right up with Pall Mall. Botanist and Red Ribbon wero preferred in that order in tho Cup, for which Jean Laddo and Thoughtful were withdrawn. Hatch, on tho top-weight, was very keen at the' barrier, and got out the best. Ho led down the back from Georgo and Botanist, with Red Ribbon liandy. Tho last-named got through on the fence at tho homo turn, and quickly settling the top-weight she won by several lengths from Orleans, with Botanist a poor third. Then came Martial Air, Want, George, Prince Laddo, and His Eminence in that order. The top-weight, Splendidus, was the public choice in the Belvedere Hack Handicap, but he ran very badly, and is not as good as. was thought of him.At the start Lady General jumped out smartly, and led down the back,/.with the remainder in a line. Splendidus was prominent round the bend, but at tho straight entrance gave way to Consultation. In a good finish,. the latter beat Lady General by a head. Need was a fair third, and then came Merrie Poto. Rongora was at a short price for the Hack Welter Handicap, with the Maniapoto gelding, Mania Park, second choice.. They finished in that order, with the top-weight going very comfortably. Firing Lino got left a few lengths at the start, and ran in tho rear tho whole way. Le Chat ran off tho course at the top turn, and was pulled up. Lady Black was withdrawn from the Electric Handicap, leaving five runners. Hushabye, Otter, and Bradamante wero evenly backed. Tho two latter were quickest to get going, and led into the straight, where Hushabye came on tho outsido and won very easily. Need finished well in third place, Bradamante was fourth, and Ally next. • In the Taratahi Hack Welter Handicap, Hylami showed" that his form in the Trial Handicap, was all wrong 'by defeating a much better field at hiß second attempt. Try Again led down the back lyith Lady General, but the latter soon superseded her, and led into tho straight from Hylami. At tho distanco Try Again came on, and she and Hylami fought out a good finish, victory going to the Hymettus gelding. The top-weight, who got i a bad run, was third, and Consultation next.
Stream of Gold was at tho shortest figure in the Maiden Piate, but ho ran very badly, and was nevei; near the front. An outsider in Marengo] led Master Boris to tho turn,. but the Boris golding then took charge, and iton anyhow. Black Hill was second, and then camo Marongal, Zimiuere, Stream of Gold, and Crescent Moon. Tho winner is trained by W. Corlett at Clarevillo. He is very liko his sire, who was a good performer when trained at Porirua. For the concluding ovont, tho Maungariki Welter Handicap, Jean JJaddo was made a slightly better favourite " than Sir Agnes. Tho latter won easing up from Sir Solo, with Joan Laddo a good third. Sir Agnes was unlucky in making his run in the previous event in which he took part.' TRIAL PLATE, of 50 sors. Six furlongs.
