ENGINEERING SUPPLIES FROM BRITAIN.
PERMITS TO IMPORT TO BE STRICTLY REGULATED. , By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland,' November 1. A statement, in regard to tho permits now being secured by certain' New Zealand importers for the manufacture in the United Kingdom, of engineering supplies was made this evening by the Hon. Arthur Myers. "The great majority of i the applications for these permits, that have been made to me to date, 1 ' said Mr. Myers, "have been, on the whole, of a reasonable nature. I have forwarded those that have "been favourably considered to. tho High Commissioner, who, I t'tiink, will bo t able to take action in regard to them (with every* prospect of success. Members of the commercial .community, will readily realise that I have a somewhat responsible duty to discharge in these matters, for when we make a report for the execution of ordere for the maintenance of our primary industries, and means of transport for the same, it is often tantamount to requesting the Ministry of Munitions in the Old Country to make a break in the production of military supplies which they themselves require, in order .to manufacture something . for our needs. In view'of this fact,. !am not disposed to give encouragement to applications' from importers for the issue of these permits, unless I- am satisfied that the goods specified are unobtainable in the Dominion, and that they are of such a liature as to be essential to 'our uriient requirements."
