S.S. POHERUA ASHORE
VESSEL FLOATED OFF. By Telegraph—Press .Association. Chrlstohuroh, October S, midnight. Advice was received to-night that the Union Company's s.s. Poherua, bound from Dunedin to Greymouth, ia ashore on the.Wakamoa Reef, on'the southernmost point of Banks Penin-sifia,-two miles south of Akaroa Heads. The weather along the coast-was very foggy to-day; and the'coastlino'was almost totally obscured. It was probably, low. tide when tho vessel struck.
The Corinna - left Ly ttelton at 10 o'clock to-night for the scene, taking salvaging gear. No other particulars aro available. The Corinna will reach tho Poherua at 2 a.m. The Wakamoa Eeef is surrounded by deep-water on all sides, and the Corinna should be be able to go quite close. . [Late advices received by the Secretary of the Post Office are to the effect tha't_ the Poherua has been refloated, and is now on hor way to Lyttelton.] Tho Pohenia was built at Middlesfiorough in 1890 by Messrs. Harkiss and Son. The vessel has been runliiiig in thq Grevmouth-Oamaru-Duno-din run for tho last couple of weeks, and Captain Edge is in charge.
