ADYANCE BEYOND FLERS FOLLOWING THE " LEAPING BARRAGE" •The following special dispatch has been received from the New Zealand official war correspondent: — October 1. "This afternoon the Otago and Canterbury men successfully attacked a German strong point and new trench beyond Flcrs. Tho Auckland moil and the men of the Rifle Brigade were holding tho position'on tho right, and tho. Wellingtons on the left. This operation was preceded by a tremendous bombardment, in the midst of . which appeared tho flame of the, shells sending . their ..lire' along the trench, and great . rings of black smoke into tlfc air'. The bombardment extended for miles along- . the line, and was a wonderful spectacle. Its intensity on the sector attacked by the New Zealalidors' exceeded'anything I witnessed either in July or September in the Soinme battles. / "Following- tho leaping 'barrage'the New .Zealanders quickly gained their objectives. .Otago's • steal- in pursuing the., ftyiiie enemy .carried them-beyond, and mooting the machine-gun fire they returned to their objective.
