CROWN PRINCE'S PEACE EFFORT
SCORN IN AMERICA MR LLOYD GEORGE'S RINGING CHALLENGE • Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. '■ ■ ' London, October 5. The. "Times V correspondent, in New lork writes:'"The Crown Prince's tearful attempt to besiege American sympathies has utterly failed to produce a single emotion excepting scorn. This result must undoubtedly be attributed to Mr. Lloyd George's admirably-timed interview. Since the beginning of the war no utteranco by a member of the British Cabinet lias been received witli greater sympathy." AMERICA WILL NOT MEDIATE IN THE WAR BUT WILL WATCH EVENTS. Australian-New Zealand Gable Association. (Rec.' October 7, 0.35 a.m.) , Washington, October' 6. High officials of the State- Department deny that America has taken, or intends to take, immediate steps in the direction of mediation in tho war. They declare that tho many rumours to that effect .are without foundation. Mr. Lloyd George's interview showed clearly that such a step would be unwclcome. Meanwhile the development of events was being watched for any indicationwhen peace proposals will he welcomed. There is some interest in an- announcement that Mr. Henry has summoned the secretary of the Stockholm Peaco Conference to visit America, and also in a notification that Count Bernstorff will pay a speoial visit to dent Wilson on Monday. ■*>
