THE BIG CASUALTY' LISTS
STATEMENT BY DEFENCE MINISTER. Reference to the recent big casualty, lists was made by the Defence Minister yesterday, in reply to'an inquiry as to whether, in consequence of the serious losses, more men would be sent from New Zealand. ' ' ' "It must not he supposed that these heavy casualties will continue," said Mr. Allen. "The winter will be coming on soon, when our casualty lists win be very muoh smaller, and our Reinforcements will accumulate, again. These reoent losses were incurred in major operations, in which our men wore heavily engaged, and the chances are that they, will he relieved now" for a little while. The rate of Rein- 1 forcement was fixed to'meet,an estimated loss, which has on the average not yet been exceeded, 'We are regit' larly sending/ more than sufficient to make good the losses in the Force. Those recent big lists cover the only very serious losses for the past sis or eight' months. Previously the casualties have been light,. and accumulation has been going on. The last time I heard the figures we had 6000 men' at the base in England. Rome of these may have been men recovering from' wounds or sicknws, but the bulk pf them wero Reinforcements in reserve.'*
