MINISTER CONSIDERS EXPENSES ) TOO HEAVY. The Department of Internal Affairs has received from Mr. P. A. M'Hardy, '• of Palmerston "North, the promoter or the Anzac Art Union, a statement 'of , accounts in connection therewith. Particulars are as under :—The 'art union license granted was for 200,000 tickets at Is. each, but tho number sold was 376,720. The gross returns wore £18,836. Of this sum £1163 Is. od.' was paid as commission for tho sale of tickets, and the other expenses were as follow:—Advertising, £1467 125. ! lOd.: salaries and wages, £130; posta-ges and telegrams, £75 12s. 9d.; sundries, £20 — os. 7d.; travelling and'show expenses, £138 18s/ lid. j oartage and lighting, £10 Is. lid. ; -printing and stationery,£488 19s. 3d.; office expenses, £15 9s. 9d.; total, £3509 16s. Id., leaving £15,326 3s. lid. available for the Soldiers' Hostel at Palmerston North, for which the money was raised. The Minister of' Internal Affairs (the , Hon'. G. W. Russell) stated l to a, Dominion - reporter yesterday that the large expenditure incurred could not be regarded as satisfactory, and oompared very unfavourably with that of other art unions which had been licensed. For instance, ho said, the raffle of a house at Dannevirke, donated by Messrs. W. and F. Knight, realised £7237, and the expenditure was £45 only—a result most creditable to Dannevirke. As a result of the expend)-' ture on the Anzac Art Union, ho added, a limit will be placed on expenditure in all similar cases for tie future.
