21st REINFORCEMENTS MANY ADDITIONAL RECRUITS KEQUIRED

The official figures show.that many additional recruits are still required for the Twenty-first Reinforcements, which will be mobilised during the last week of the present month. The rate lot''recruiting throughout the Dominion is fairly brisk at the present time, but it will require to bo well maintained in order tbat the draft may enter camp at full strength. Tho present shortages of infantry in tho four military districts aro as follow:--Auckland, 140; Wellington, 384; Canterbury, 115; Otago, 157; total for Dominion, 79G. It may bo noted x in this connection that daily recruiting figures published In the newspapers throughout _ New Zealand furnish no exact' indication of the position as regards any particular draft. A man who onlists to-day states when he will be willing to enter camp, and ho may not be available for service for several mouths to come. Tho recruits who declare their readiness to procced to camp directly they are require'd. after registration are always in a minority, most men preferring to allow themselves some time to settlo up their affairs. For instance, tho names of over 30 fit men who have been accepted for service in Wellington City are published in this morning s Dominion, but all of these men are not available for tho next draft.

The official figures showing enlistments for the Twenty-first Infantry Reinforcements as on Friday last are as follow, the figures including shortages for the Twentieth Reinforcements:—

Group 1, Auckland, shortage 14; 2, I'aeroa, 27; 3, Whangarei, 37; 4, Hamilton, 62. Total shortage for Auckland military district, 140. Group 5, Wellington, shortage 64; 6, I'almerston North, 118; 7, Napier, 66; 7a, Masterton. 02; 8, Haft-era, 84. Total shortage for Wellington military district, 384. Group 9, Ohristchurch, shortage 30; 10, Timaru, 81; 11, Kaiapoi, surplus 18; 11a, Greyniouth, shortage 67; 12, Nelson, 5. shortage for Canterbury military district, 115. Group 13, Dunedin, shortage, 46; 14, Invercargill, 14; 15, Oamaru, 62; 16, Milton, 15. Total shortage for Otago military district, 157. The total Dominion shortage is 796.
