ATTEMPT TO CLIMB MOUNT EGMONT
*_ —:_ A WELLINGTONIAN'S EXPERIENOES. Mr.. P. Foord; of Wellington, and Mr. Williams, guide of the- North Egmont House, made an unsuccessful attempt to reach the summit- of the mountain on Sunday. A start was made, at' 5.45 a.m., under the most favourable conditions,' standard .time feeing made to Humphries' Castle. Siere frozen snow was mot with, end o climbers had to out stops up to the top of Jacob's Ladder, where the conditions improved, again, and tie '600 OR.'rock was reachedat 8.20. Shoitly afterward* eolid ice was struck, necessitating extreme care. . Unfortunately Mr. Foord then took cramp in both legs, and though they had managed to attain a. height of '500 feet, and the end of tie journey was within striking-distance,-it-was deemed inadvisable.to proceed' further, in view of the risk. •'■ From about 7300 feet right down to Humphries' Castle glissading Was in, this sport alone being worth the climb. Mr. Foord has now made three attempts to reach the summit; being successful in "the .two previous efforts.
