M.R.C.S., and has returned to the* Navy as 'a lieut.-surgeon (R.N.), stationed at present on H.M.S. Thames, a submarine mother ship, i Commander Armstrong, Pv.N., who is touring tho Empire overseas for the purpose of. enlisting recruits for the Motor Patrol Service in the war zone, is this to arrive in Auckland from Vancouver on Soptomnci 18. He will most probably visit Wellington. Mrs. Mervyn Wells, of Cambridge, has received cabled advico that her brother, Lieutenant TV. Beale, of the Dth Battalion Norfolk Mounteds, has been- wounded. Mr. T. R. Tripe, accountant in ths Wellington office of tho Union Steam Ship Company, who has been appointed branch manager for the company at Launeeston in succession to the late Mr. F. C. Cramond, was on Monday, presontod by tho officials of the Wellington Patent-Slip and the heads of departments, of the Union Company in .Wellington'with a solid English leather suit case and a Mosgiel rug. Mr. W. A. Kennedy (local manager) who made the presentation, referred to Mr. Tripe's long and faithful service, and expressed tho sorrow all felf at losing him. Mr. Tripe, in responding, expressed regret' at the breaking up of many old associations. Mr. Tripe will leave by the Moeraki to-morrow to take up his new duties. — . ■ News has been received in Wellington that Lieut. Carol Smith', soil of Mrs. Henry Smith, of Chilton House, Wellington, has been Killed in action in Franco. Lieut. Smith was a member of the staff of the Bank of New SouWi Wales in Brisbane, and enlisted to go to the front with the Australian Expeditionary Force. It is some veare .since he was in Wellington. Mrs. Smith who has been visiting England, is returning to New Zealand. Mr. S. J. Flewellyn died at his residence, Mount Eden,;on Sunday morning at tho''ago"''df"''"'67 years. Mr. Flewellyn was for some time licensee of the Royal Hotel, Auckland, bnt retired about five months ago. Prior to going to Auckland Mr. Flewellyn kept the Club Hotel in Wellington. Ho was also well known in hotel circles in Nelson.
