* ——— MR, P. A. M'HARDY COMES TO TOWN. On Saturday Mr. P. A. M'Hardy, of Palmerston North, that generous and patriotic gentleman who is the chairman of tho Anzao Art Union, strolled through the streets of Wellington, with u pocket jingling with half-sovereigns,', eager to give them away. Mr.' M'Hardy's largasse had to 'be won, hoVover, by those people he, happened to accost. They had to havo in their possession n ticket in the Anzac Arc Union to earn the gold coin. Mr. I M'Hardy went about tho business quite unostentatiously, ami by the time ho got through he had got rid of a fair proportion of his golden burden, showing that tho public is buying tho tickets very freely. An incident—a lady with a perambulator (and something in it) was asked if she had tho golden passport. Yes, she had. She groped in the bottom of the pram. ,auJ pulled out a purso and a ticket in it. Mr. M'Hardy looked surprised. He didn't expect to findone in a perambulator. "Thauk you," said tho smiling lady. "That wili just pay off my Inst instalment on the furniture, and wo will have everything free
As the, result of Mr. M'Hardy's visit to Wellington, it is understood that several thousands of tickets have been disposed of in the City. He will visit the City again in a fortnight's rime. In order to avoid any misunderstanding on the point it may be stated that that the, money expended in the manner stated above ■ came out of Mr. M'Hardy's own pocket, and not out of the art union-funds.
