HEALTH CONDITIONS IN CAMP
STATEMENT BY SURGEON-GENERAL
HENDERSON
111 viow of various "panicky" rumours which have been going about concerning the health of the men at Trentham camp, Surgeon-General Henderson (Director-General of Medical Services) jnado the following statement yesterday:—
"During tho period from January 1 last to data 20.000 men have passed through the camp," he said, "and the number of deaths during that time has been 31. Of this number, 9 were from cerebro-spinal meningitis, 17 were from other varieties of disease—whichincluded cases of pneumonia, measles, epilepsy, heart disease, and alcoholism —and 5 resulted from accidents. The death-rate on this basis is 1.5 per 1000. There are at present no cases of cerebro-spinal. meningitis in hospital, and no serious cases of sickness, if we except two cases of pneumonia, which are pursuing a normal course;"
