s, MR. G. HAROLD SMITH'S CAMPAIGN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Pahiatua, August 12. Mr. G. Harold Smith addressed a largely attended meeting at Terehunga on Friday night. He emphasised tho necessity of avoiding petty political differences in the present critical time, and. pointed out that the country's urgent duty was to support tho National Government. The candidate had an excellent reception, and on a show of hands tho meeting declared ,in tho candidate's favour, with only three dissenting. ,
Pahiatua, August 12. (From Our Special Correspondent.) The Pahiatua by-election is proceeding quietly. The general opinion is that Mr. G. H. Smith, who is well known throughout the electorate, willtop the poll on' Thursday next. Motions expressing appreciation of the, earnest manner in which tho late Mr. J. H. Escott carried out his duties in the Pahiatua electorate have been passed by local bodies in Pahiatua, Woodville, and Akitio.
