JAPAN REACHING OUT

SHIPPING MAGNATE IN WELLINGTON. - Mr. L. Kamiya, president of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha Line of steamers, passed through Wellington on Saturday en route from Auckland to Ohristcliurch. As stated in these columns a few days ago, his businoss is to report on tho prospects of trade between Japan and New Zealand, with a view, perhaps, to the establishment of a direct cargo service. Japan is now manufacturing merchandise of an extensive range for which the world formerly looked to Germany and Austria, notably cheap cotton and silk goods, toys, fancy goods, clocks, etc., and the trade is ono that is growing very rapidly as tho new source of supply is becoming known.

Mr. Kamiya, in an interview, stated that not only was Japan seeking to open tip and develop her ' markets abroad, but goods wero produced here and in Australia that Japan wanted, and that concerned his company very immediately as ' freight-carriers both ways/ They wanted our wool, and Australia's spelter, and later on they might even want our frozen meat; beef more particularly. There was a probability of a lino of steamers being established to ply between Japan ana Western Australia, via Singapore and Java. As to the question whether a direct; cargo-boat service could bo established with New Zealand, that would depend entirely oil the development of trade._ It was developing quite satisfactorily, and would, lie thought, continuo to do so, as it was highly probable that for time after the war ceased enemy trado would ?be prohibited by the Entente nations. Later on Mr. Kamiya is to visit Vancouver on behalf, of his company, which is concerning itself also with trade with South American ports.
