STATE STEAMERS FOR NEW ZEALAND
LONDON RUMOURS
Australian-New Zealand Cable Association.
London, August 10. The shipping journal, "Fairplay," in a reference to New Zealand's cre'ation of a State steamship .line, says:— "Everyone admits tho present shortage of tonnage, but this .does not justify the Government going in wholesale for shipping, even assuming that New Zealand's trade, either in emigrants or merchandise, could support such a' fleet. By the.'time these 20,000-ton vessels are built, lye shall probably have a long period of low and unprofitable freights."
[During the debate on the cost of living, on August 3, Mr. Massey referred to the great increase that Lad taken place in freights, and added that, although lie did not greatly favour Socialistic proposals, ho looked forward to seeing some day a State line of 20,000-ton steamers, running at 20 knots, between England and New Zealand.]
