THE MEAT TRADE
CABLEGRAMS FROM THE*HIGH COMMISSIONER. The Right Hon. W. !•'. Massev, Prime Minister, read the following telegrams, both dated July 25, from the High Commissioner upon the meat position to the House of Representatives yesterday :~ "In reply to your telegram of July 22. During the last twclvo months practicallv all supplies of New Zealand wether mutton have been reserved for the feeding of troops, with the exception of carcasses considered unsuitable on account of being too fat, and also with the exception of 6ome Canterbury wethers arriving jn London. , New Zealand ewes arc also being used for troops when 'there are insufficient supplies of beef and ether qualities of mutton at any particular distributing centre." ~ "Tour telegram of July 24 on the subject of prices of New Zealand meat in season to hand. As stated in my telegram on July 4, the abnormally high prices ruling for New Zealand meat to the public are greatly due to the fact that while New Zealand wholesale prices are controlled, thero is no control over home-killed or Argentine meat. The Board of Trade report, forwarded June 20, states that the Board of Trade has no power to force the Argentine companies to sell at any fixed prices. Contracts between the Board of Trade and the Argentine Companies stipulate that provision must be made for'the hitter's private trade, and N the Board of Trade fear that if they interfere with the present position with regard to the Argentine prices, it will probably prejudice the present v contracts, whereby 50,000 tons per month, are supplied "at moderate prices by the Argentine companies for the use of the British Army and the French 'Army.'"
