NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE
At the last executive meeting of tho New Zealand Alliance the fiev. W. J. C/omrio was re-appointed chairman, and Mr. J. W. Brown treasurer. The Rev. G. Knowles (Smith was added to the executive. Mr.'lsitt was heartily thanked for. his ablo services rendered before the Parliamentary Committee in furtherance of tho petitions from over 100,000 persons, praying for the liquor bars to be closed at G p.m. during the war period and for six months afterwards. Apprecition was also expressed that his Lordship Bishop Sprott had represented the views of the General Synod of the Church of England, that Mr. George Booth had given effective evidence from, a businessman's point of view; that Professor Bedford had so ahly emphasised the economic reason; that Captain (Dr.) Petitt had «iven powerful reasons against the use of liquor from an efficiency point of ..view; and that Mrs. Atkinson had so forcibly represented the women of the Dominion. Arrangements were made for future action. It was reported that tho accounts in connection with the Allies' tea and patriotic, meeting 011 June 0 had : been duly audited, and the net balance of £86 Os. 2d. had.been handed over to the treasurer of the W.C.T.U. towards the £3000 effort of the union for the Soldiers' Fund. It was further reported that the collection at the citizens' meeting on June 29, amounting to £25 19s. lid., had been paid over to the Navy Fund as arranged. Great satisfaction was expressed with the announcement of the Minister of Defence in Parliament last week that all liquor had been removed from the military camp at Samoa, so that there is not now a wet canteen in any part of tho British possessions in Australasia, the Pacific, or Canada. . .The following resolution was adopted.:—"That this executive has heard .with sreat satisfaction the official announcement that the wet canteen has been abolished in Samoa, and that tho thanks and congratulations of the Executive bo for-' warded to tho Minister of Defenco for this further contribution to the cause of temperance and military efficiency!"
