POLICE. CASES; Yesterday morning Mi-. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's. Court. For . being intoxicated in . Manners Street on July 4, Frank Adair, aged 36, was'fined 405., or in default seven days' imprisonment. A, prohibitum order was issued against him for twelve months) to be operative throughout, the Wellington and Hutt districts. An Indian of middlo age,, named Weer Singh, with three previous convictions against him for inebriety, was fined.4os., oiv in default seven days' imprisonment, for a like offence; and he also submitted to a. prohibition order for one year over the' Wellington and Hutt districts. Charged with stealing a portmanteau,value. .Co 10s., belonging to Diigald Fer : guson. from a. railway, carriage at Ngoio, on .Tuly 4, Charles .William- Holxlay pleaded not guilty, and said ho had set a friend's portmanteau down alongside the one produced, and it turned out that it was not his friend's at all. His friend did not appear to support this story, and Hi's Worship convicted accused, and sent him to gaol for one month. Three young men, Peroival. Charles Roberts. George Albert Kins, and Alexander M'Carthy, .whose ages ran from twenty to thirty yeaT's, were charged with destroying 0. cabbasre tree, valued nt XI, the'property of Edward Hunter, of 121 Hanson Street.. Roberts'_ pleaded guilty, and the other hvo denied • the charge. From the evidence it appeared that the -offence was committed late on the night of July '4, and tho owner had experienced considerable annoyance at the hands of the voung men. The M-inis-trate. declared them all guilty! . They were all in it, and their conduct was a, rash and wanton destruction of a citizen's'property which could not be lightly dealt iviHi. He admonished them, and, saying they were old know better, fined them v£l each, ordered them to pay 6s. Sd. each towards th* cost of the tree, and eacli 6s. Bd. towards- witnesses' expenses, or in default seven days'"imprisonment. A man aged 68 Tears, named William' Thompson, was charged with drunkenness and indecency in Ghnznee Street. He was convicted and fined J23, and witness's expanses, 4*., or 'in default 14 davs' imprisonment. For lyinsr intoxicated in Buckle Street, •Tames Whitn (55) was convicted and diecharged. and for an indecent act while intoxicated he wa= convicted and fined JB3, or in. default H days' imprisonment. INDICTABLE OFFENCES. To a.charge of attempting an indecent assnult upon a .little sirl at the Hutt, Earl Skinner (39). who was represented by Mr. T. M. Wilford, pleaded not Ruilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail hei'ng fixed at JCIOO in one, or two sureties of J650 each.
