LIEUT. M. JURISS SAFE
PRISONER OF WAR IN MAINZ., Many in AVellington will be pleased to learn that Lieutenant Max Juriss, of Wellington, who went to tho front in the North of Franco as a second lieutenant of Iho Bth London Regiment, and wa3 in May last reported missing, has been reported to be. a prisoner of war at-Mainz (Germany). It was surmised by many that he had been killed in an attack made on the German trenches on May 21, but according to a cablegram received by Mrs. Juriss from BrigadierGeneral Richardson in London, ho was taken prisoner, that day. Since tlien Mrs. Juriss. .has received. .corroborative messages from the Territorial Records, London, and also from Colonel GiKbon, Chief of Staff in New Zealand.
Lieutenant Juriss was at one timo a member of the Royal Now Zealand Artillery, and acted as drill instructor to the Forces. Lai or ho became an instructor to Die schools, and conducted a gymnasium in AA'ollingtonSouth. He was refused a commission locnlly. and finally ho paid his own passage to England, and was given a commission in a Lancashire Regiment soon after bo arrived, and was transferred to the Bth Londons, shortly before they were ordered to proceed to France. It is understood that Lieutenant ha* been commended for bravery in tho field shown in the samo action in which ho was unfortunate enougb- to he taken prisoner.
