CONTROL OF MILE

MINISTER AND COUNCIL IN AGREEMENT. , ; A definite step has at last been taken in the direction of securing a purer mil" supply for Wellington. The milk control by-law, ' which was passed by trie City Council about a month ago, was to come up for confirmation to-night, but unexpected opposition was raised to it by the Minister of Public Health (lion. G. W. Russell); who asserted that the council was usurping the rights of the State as vested by statute. A deputation waited upon the Minister last week, and a conference has since been held, at which, it is understood, an amicable agreement was arrived at. . In consequence of the decisions come to the by-law will not bo confirmed tonight. Instead it is being thoroughly revised by the Health Committee of tho City Council, of which Councillor Godber is chairman. Matters are now being' straightened out, and a new by-law, which, will be more to the liking of the Minister, whose view, it is stated, is uior'e reasonable than it was when the first protest was made, will shortly be submitted. A definite steD has been taken in the appointment of an inspector. The Minister agreed to appoint an inspector to bo recommended by the City Council, such inspector to have full powers under the i'rte of Foods' and Drugs Act. He wilt Tie under the sole control of the City Council, but his work will be supervised by the Health Department. The inspector will be employed solely in the inspection of milk and cream in the ■Wellington City area, and. as ho will have no other duties to perform, lie, should be in a position to keep a careful eye on the supplies. The name of the proposed inspector has already been submitted to the Minister, and tlie appointment will probably be confirmed shortly. It is understood that the revised bylaws will b'» made still more comprchonsive, thiw placing .the milk supply on a j satisfactory footing.
