NEW AND CONTEMPLATED ADDI- ' TIONS.

A number of uew additions to the bird section of the Wellington Zoo were announced at the Wellington Zoological Society's meeting at Mr. Castle's room, Newtown, 'last evening. Mr. Fathers presided. The secretary reported that in consequence of the war and the many patriotic efforts that members of the fociety participate iu, it was not practicable to hold meetings very often. That the society's objects were being promoted, and the'public ap/nrciated its work, and the result of its efforts was encouraging. Since its last meeting the society had presented to ths Zoo two Sevastopol geese, one bullfinch, .one red-pole, some Cinnamon canaries : and Norwich canaries, some goldfinch and canary mules, one pair Uegent birds, one pair blackheaded'mannikins. ono pair white-head-ed mannikins, and one pair ariiadavat. There had also been, presented, through' the society, ono white parrot from Miss E.. C'aldicolt,. one turtle-dove from Mrs. Brown, and one horse from Messrs. Jamle-on and M'Gregor. A pair of camels, one of 1 which the society has promised to pay for, may arrive almost immediately, pome native pigeons, for the capture of which the society is contributing, should also soon come .to hand. Negotiations are proceeding by which it is hoped (bat four pairs of ostriches will be procured within the next few days. A question re tho purchase of an elephant was discussed, and although great I difference of opinion was expressed . as ! to whether (lie immediate future would be opportune for such a purchase, tho meeting unanimously resolved to write to Africa. India, and Australia, and obtain quotations of prices of elephants. The question of proper provision for the breeding of sea-lions in the- Zoo, and suitable accomihodatipn for sea-leopards was discussed, and the meeting authorised the chairman and the secretary to, -submit to the City Council the views of tho society. The secretary reported that, the "Zoi ■Guide," published last Octolieiyhad been disposed of. The cost of the Guide was -£5+ 55., and the total receipts .£55 (is! Bd.. a net profit of 15s. Bd. In addition to the sales the society presented about three hundred copies to members of onr' Expeditionary Forces, and several hundreds were presented to advertisers, to members of the society, and to persons in New Zealand nnd other parts of ths world who were interested .in zoology.
