THE EGMONT BREWERY

POPULAR BEVERAGES,

One of tlie oldest institutions in Taranaki is the Egniont Brewery, in Queen Street, New Plymouth. Tho brewery was established as long ago as 180-1 by the late Air. James Paul, awl the business is now carried on by his executors. Paul's ale, stout, and aerated waters are well known throughout Taranaki, j>nd their reputation has gone ahead of them into other districts, but it is chiefly in Taranaki that they are in constant demand. Paul's draught ales are on sale in a majority of tho hotels in New Plymouth, and travellers along.the Taranaki coast need never be afraid of being unable to obtain, their favourite beverage, for the coastal hotels keep "Paul's" on tap. Most of tho hotels round the mountain, too, stock it. Family trade is well catered -for, and people desiring a good light ale for private consumption may havo it delivered in two-gallon jars. A large trade is already done in this line. Quito ail important branch of the business is tho aerated waters department. Among tho drinks made are soda water, ginger ale, ginger beer, lemonade, lime juico and soda, creamy sotla, kola, cider, raspberry, lemon squash, orangeade, hop beer. The same department also makes cloves, peppermints, lemon squash, bitters, etc. It is a most important portion of the establishment, and is particularly well fitted out. Among the awards which the firm has to its credit are the following:— 1891—Taranaki Jubilee Exhibition, first prize for hop ale. ■ ' ; ■ . 190-I—New Plymouth Exhibition, diploma for best collection of cordinls am! aerated waters. ISBS-9—Auckland Exhibition, first-class nwuSl lur pale ale. A "tour" of the brewery is very interesting, and quickly serves to convince one that the firm lias a cnpital plant, excellent stocks of material, and that cleanliness and thoroughness pervade tho establishment.
