RETURNED SOLDIERS' CLUB

THE'POSITION' TO-DAY. , With the;ieturn of further large drafts it returned soldiers, the matter of providing them with' comfortable club premises is Sbeinf carefully considered on business-like fines .'by the Wellington branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association. Up till the present, club'premises have been provided for tho men chiefly through the activities of Capt. Simson, and that club has proved a very welcome haven of rest to many of the returned jmen, but particularly those whose people i reside outsido Wellington, and those who ■have no fixed place of abode. As the 'numbers of returned men have increased, the premises on Lambton Quay have been found to be more or less unsuitable for ..the purpose, and the local association has taken in hand tho task of securing new and more commodious premises in the near vicinity, negotiations for the acquisition of which are still proceeding. The proposal is that tie club. shalF bi .managed by a committee, comprised of returned soldiers resident in. Wellington, but that all matters affecting the finance of the club shall be vested in trustees, • who shall be gentlemen of standing in the City. The club is to be governed by a strict, code- of rules, the- underlying principlß of which shall be, apart from providing a place for returned men to, drop into, to assist them during that period ,of unrest that .usually" succeeds; their return home; to help, tho Government in finding: work for. the.men, and.in every respect to make-as fine a citizen of ,him' ;as lie, in the.majority of cases, has proved, .himself, to be a fighter in the cause of' ■ Empire., 7 . • . . As soon u» mutters are property in -train,. a,.. meeting will be ; called: for tha purpose of explaining - the details of the: scheme, ,and following that an appeal will' be made for. funds to establish and run the clufi in such ft manner that it will be a credit- to the men and the City.
