ANNUAL' MEETING
The annual meeting of the New Zealand Club was held last night in the Ui amber of Commerce rooms, Mr R. H \?ebb (president) in the chair. ti The annual report stated that although the war had affected the club's activities during the year, and the number of guests was limited, the work of the club had, been justified. The year began without a credit balance, the- club haviii" voted it to the Patriotic Fund, but the year closed with a credit balance of is. Id., alter meeting all liabilities. Receipts amounted to -£151 195., and the expenditure <£109 12s. Subscriptions were paid by 256 members, and the committee had resolved that the membership of those, -who serve with, the Expeditionary l'orce would be maintained without payment of subscriptions. The membership roll was at. maximum capacity. ..11l moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman briefly referred to the success which had been achieved by the club, the objectsof which were to foster patriotism by studying the institutions,, history, and literature of all countries, especially, New 'Zealand. Mr. C. E. Wheeler (vice-president) referred to the lunches given by the club and to the fact that the Y.M.C.A. desired to raise the charge for same. He noped this would-not be charged against membors, but provided out-of the funds. Messrs. C. R. Smith and F. S. Pope supported Mr. Wheeler's remarks. Tne report and balance-sheet wero adopted, subject to the latter being .audited.'
The election of officers resulted as follows President, Mr. Charles E. Wheeler; vice-presidents, Messrs. R. B. Davis and W. E. Spencer; committee, Messrs. R: J. Aekins, E. S. Baldwin, C. M. Luke, W. M. Page, and C. R. Smith; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. 0. Sutton; hon. auditor, Mr. D. E. Beaglchole. The chairman said that in the ci-isis through which the Empire was passing it was the duty of all members to promote the objects of the club. He suggested that the • operations of the club might be extended by promoting lectures and meetings for patriotic purposes. The club might co-operate with other bodies in this work. The possibility of inviting returned soldiers to the lunches of the club might be also considered.
After further discussion it was decided that it bo a recommendation to tho incoming committee to consider means for furthering the objects of the club. Appreciative remarks were made of the work done by the retiring president and committee.
