RELIEF FOR RETURNED MEN

WHAT HAWKE'S BAY IS DOING,

By. Telegraph—(Special Correspondent.)

Napier, May 31.' The policy of the Hawke'6 Bay Relief Association was plainly indicated at last evening's meeting, when four of the successful applicants at the recent ballot for iand for returned soldiers applied for financial assistance. After a long discussion' during which members emphasised the assistance that is already given by land' boards, it was decided that these and all/similar applicants should be granted up to J-100, but-that each case snould be considered on its merits. It was further decided that the 6tatus of applicants should be considered as being indicated by the place of enlistment pending reconsideration of the question at a later date.

On the suggestion of the president, Mr. T. Mason Chambers, it was decided that advances should be made, through. the branch societies, such advances to be used for fencing and building and .that the Crown Lands Ranger should bo asked to assess the value of the improvements done or to be done. All grants are to be subject to satisfactory reports, from the branch societies.

Ihe Wairarapa Society's methods of indiscriminately giving d£s to every returned soldier 1 was disapproved. The difficulty of dealing with the wives and children of soldiers in caihp was discussed. . It was stated that these men did not sign an order for a portion of their pay to be handed to their wives, and that it w-as only when .they went on tho .troopships that such orders were made. A case was instanced where a man had sent only 255. to his wife during six weeks. It was decided to make represento the Government with tne object of having; a system whereby orders on pay would ■ be. made as soon as the men leave their homes.

It was decided- to protest against the Government's proposal to-provide for the maintenance or soldiers' illegitimate children. It was stated, that extreme difficulty would be experienced in proving the parentage. ■ , .
