WELLINGTON HAS A SURPLUS

LATEST RECRUITS

For the first time for several mouths No, 5 Group's quota for a reinforcement has been mobilised above full strength. Wellington City and Suburbs were asked to find 172 .men, and yesterday eleven new soldiers were sent into camp to join Hie 17th Reinforcements, making a surplus for this district of 13 men. Other recruits who are desirous of joining the 17th. draft, and who wish to go into camp at onee, can do so provided they are passed as medically fit. This scheme is being carried out on account of the Defence authorities having asked No. 5 Group to make up certain wastage, etc., and it is anticipated that no difficulty will be experienced in obtaining over, and above the number of men wanted by the end of this'week.

Of late recruiting has been brisk, and a considerable number of men have come forward during the last day or two. For instance, yesterday 15 men registered at Buckle Street, and of that number 11 passed the doctor as fit, one as temporarily unfit, while three were declared medically unfit. Latest Men for Camp. The names of eleven men who were sent into camp from No. 5 Group Area Olhce yesterday to join the Seventeenth Reinforcements are as follow:—W. J. Clements, J. E. D'Oyly, J. A. Garrett, J. J. Higgins, A. G. Jarvis, J. Macdonald, H. Sargent, — Shabott, J. W. Wilkinson, M. Willey, J. Moss, and J. Rea.

Yesterday's Fit Registrations. Following are the names of recruits who wore passed as medically fit at Buckle Street yesterday. With the exception of two, all volunteered for the Infantry:— . E. A. Haliday, draper, City. G. W. Williams, farmer, Lower Hutt. 1". O. Hart, clerk, To Aro. D. .T. F. Jeune, engineer, City. y. H. Reade, City (Home Service). G. King, clerk, City. W. CHRISTCHURCH'S QUOTA

By Telegraph-Press Association. Christchurch, May 31. The Christchurch quota of the 17th Reinforcements left for Trentham to-night thirty over the strength, which, with the assistance given by tho other areas in tho Canterbuiy Military District, will greatly assist in wiping off the debit score marked against the province in connection with the raising of" previous reinforcements. The quota was olio of the strongest numerically that has ever been dispatched from Christchurch.
