WHARFINGER'S DUTIES
KEW ROTA DECIDED BY HARBOUR BOARD'. . At last evening's meeting of the Harbour Board, the board wenc into committee to discuss a report drawn up by a special committee 6et up for the purpose of inquiring into aud. reporting on the administration of the "Wharfinger's Department. After over an hour's discussion, the Press w6re called in, the business done in committee was approved, and the following; report was presented as having been approved by the board:— That this committee, in accordance with the resolution of the board on April 26, reports that it has reconsidered (he present administration of tho Wharfinger's Department and suggests that in the best interests of the future working of the wharves the duties of the wharfinger be redefined as follow:— 1. That in future he be styled traffic manager and chief wharfinger. 2. That tho traffic manager and chief wharfinger shall confer with the harbourmaster concerning where ships are to bo berthed, due regard being given by both officers to the work the,ships have to do, tho transhipments involved, and the condition of the sheds. ' . : 3. To havo complete control of the wharf traffic and of all labour employed in connection therewith or with cargo within the jurisdiction of the board and .in accordance, with the board' 6 by-laws-; subject to tho right of the permanent employees to appeal to the committee set up for that purpose cither as regards punishments, suspensions, or promotions. 4. To deal with and settle all questions tor remission of storage or other charges, claims, and disputes up to .£lO, the same to be reported to the i Wharves and Accounts Committee; all amounts ever that eiirn (£10) to be referred to tho WhaTves and Accounts Committee for decision. 5. To send in a monthly report to the secretary for the information of the Wharves and Accounts Committee, giving details of claims,: accidents, complaints, changes of staff, promotions, punishments, suspensions, suggestions for improved working, and generally any noteworthy occurrences,. G. To refer to the secretary in all cases where policy as distinct from details appears to be involved. -• 7. To consult regularly with .tho secretary and other heads of Departments with J 1 ™,w to the sriiooth -working of the board s business. 8. To see that the members of iho permanent staff of his department aro dulv ■Instructed as to their duties. The committee further recommends that in manauer and chief wharfinger'snffine .be located in the Wharf Office Building, Queen's Wharf.
