RELIEF EFFORT
WHAT IS REQUEUED,
Somo few .weeks ago the .Minister of fat temal Affairs (the Hon. G. W. Russell) reoeived a letter from Mr. G. H. Burnett, of Wanganui, in which that gentleman made certain inquiries about the class of commodities that ought to be sent for the relief of Belgians and Serbians, and fdr the use of soldiers in hospital. He made the inquiries because it was intended to initiate avmovement in Wanganui with the object of sending a large consignment of clothes to the Belgian and Serbian people, as well as other goods which would requiro insulated storage and freight space. In Qms-reply Mr. Russell states that he is advised that it requires*, continuous effort to maintain supplies sufficient to meet the requirements of the-various hospitals established for our soldiers. He points out that on the initiative of His Excellency the Governor an effort' was being made to organise the work of the various patriotic committees sending forward materials to the hospitals, in order that goods of .the..right .classes, in tha right proportions, should be sent. With regard , to' the relief of Serbia the advice was that money was preferable to goods. Indeed, money and food for the relief of both Belgians and Serbians was urgently necessary, and that clothing of any description for the Belgian poor -was also Acceptable. There was no truth in tho statement that comforts sent from the Dominion had been, returned -wifili the "ta.-?" that they were not suitable or noli required.
