SHIPBUILDING ACTIVITY IN JAPAN
In. view of the general trend of tho situation in the shipping trade, and particularly of tho stress felt among shipbuilders on account of the shortage of materials, an article in the "Japan Times" illustrating tho activity at present prevailing in shipbuilding in. Japan is interesting. ■ Tho facts, the- paper states, were given out by the head of the shipping section in the Department of Communications. At the Mitsu Bislii Dockyard and Engine' Works, Nagasaki, the Tokiwa Maru, 7300 tons, was launched on January 9. She is now nearly ready for sea, but cannot Lo delivered to solely b'ecau:*s part of her engines, has not arrived from abroad. On March 8, a sister, ship, the Tsuruga : Maru, was launched from the same yard. On March 20 a steamer of 3000 tons was also to be launched there, she being followed by another of the same class in May. During the coming fiscal year the yard intends building .two boats of 7300 tons each, and two more of 5500 tons.. At Osaka, tho Osaka Iron Works has already launched four of 14 new. vessels of. 3200 tons each already ordered, pushing on the work with a view to completing tho remainder during the coming fiscal year. At present threo boats arc under construction at tlio Innoshima plant and five at tho Osaka yard. At another yard there are four vessels rf 7300 tons under construction and in addition two of 4400 tons. Tho other yards are, the article states, working at high prossure. " "
