MAGISTRATE'S COURT
MAINTENANCE CASES
| Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.H., presided at yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, and dealt principally with maintenance cases. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was passed upon George Thomas Florence, who was J632 in arrears with ipayinents due under an order requiring" him to jnaintain his wife 'and children., ill*. H. F. O'Leary appeared for the complainant. Chin Ah Leoug, who had allowed 1 arrears to accumulate in connection' with an order for weekly payments of Bs., was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, but ihe warrant will be suspended if weekly payments of 10s. are forthcoming from a given date. • ' Samuel Blood, who was behind to the extent of : ,£l2 in payments of maintenance due to his wife, was sentenced to a mouth's imprisonment. A line of ,£3 was imposed in the case of John Angus Parry, who was convicted of disobedience of a maintenance order. Tho alternative was 21 days' imprisonment.
In the case of Josephi Palmer, also guilty of disobedience of a maintenance order, the fine was *£2 and the alternative seven days' imprisonment. Lucinda Holloway was lined £2 for being in arrears with maintenance money, the alternative being seven days' imprisonment.
Elizahotk Freeman, who had not kept up payments of maijitenanee as directed by an order of the Court, was fined 205., in default to undergo seven days' imprisonment. James O'Connor'was ordered to pay 2s. per week for each of two children, who are being maintained in a home in Auckland. VAGRANCY. William Dennis Quill, wlio had recently been discovered by'night 'without lawful excuse on tho grounds of St. Patrick's Collcgt, wiw sentenced to six months' imprisonment. A young married woman, named Frances Miller, was convicted of being an idle and disorderly person, and was committed to the Salvation Army Home for six months. BAD LANGUAGE. Joseph: Herbert Atherton, charged with drunkenness, and with using obscene language, was fined Ji3, in default to undergo -21 days' imprisonment. Thomas Lane, who had used bad language inside » house, so that it could be heard by [passers-by, was fined £2, the alternative being seven days' imprisonment. A firoman named John" Robert Webb, pleaded giiilty to a charge of using threatening behaviour, and to a further charge of using obscene language at the gangway of the steamer Paloona. lie waS fined sums totalling £5, the alternative being 11 days' imprisonment.
THEFT. A solrlier, iamed Patrick Joseph Cleary, was fined 205., for theft- of an officer's overcoat. Default was fixed at seven days' imprisonment. Tho overcoat, which had been, taken froiu Commercial Hotel, was discovered in the possession of the accused and returned to the owner.
MISCELLANEOUS,
Thomas O'Neill, against whom there were several previous .convictions, was sent to gaol for 21 days for committing an indecent act within view of a public place.
On f> charge of drunkenness, Lilian Jukes was iined 405., in default to,under go seven days' imprisonment. For a similar offence, Thomas Driseoll was fined 10s., the alternative in his case being 24 hours' imprisonment Elizabeth Williams, charged with helpless drunkenness, was remanded for a week for curative treatment. Several first-offending inebriates were also dealt with.
