ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
DROWNED IN THE HARBOUR.
Mx. Archibald Thomson, a. well-known figure on. the Wellington waterfront, and'-who resided at 32 Oriental Ter--i ace,, was drowned in. the Wellington Harbour at about 3 p.m. yesterday. I'roni -what could be gathered, it apthat • the lato Mr. Thomson, who was interested in the ' auxiliary scow Jicho, went out in a boat to attend to that vessel's moorings. It is stated that ho landed on a buoy for tho purpose of taking a line from the boat. Ihe wind was blowing fairly hard at- the time, and the boat apparently drifted away from the buoy, which, with the extra weight upon it, turned over and precipitated llr. Thomson into the water. Before assistance could be rendered lie sank out of sight. The late Mr. Thomson was a popular figure in shipping circles at the port of Wellington and elsewhere! His genial disposition made Km many friends. About 15 years ago lie was second officer of "tlie old Shaw-Savill liner Aotea, ana came ashore to take up a position wipi iiannaway and Co., stevedores, at this port. He had been in the firm about three years, when Mr. John Gannaway died, and Mr. Thomson took over tlio business. - * RAILWAY FATALITY. / By Telegraph.—Press Association. Ghristchurch, April 7. A'-railway shunter named. James Wells, 33 years of age, married, was caught while shunting this afternoon, and a- line of trucks passed over both logs. _ He was taken to the hospital and died' to-night." The accident was caused by his foot catching between tlio switch and :the rail.
