FIRES
The present, time of the year is a dangerous one,for gorse and grass fires, and .those living in the vicinity of lands, so overgrown should exercise the greatest care. At ; L4o'p.m. jesteixlay a fire broke out amongst the gorse ill the gully below Salamanca' Road, and immense volumes of. smoke poured out of the declivity, obscuring the Victoria College buildings and half of Kelburri. As the blaze threatened'to spread too near the houses situated in the gully on the Wellington Terrace side, the Fire Brigade was summoned, and in about ten minutes or so of strenuous work beat out. tho flames. OATINA FACTORY DESTROYED. By Telegraph—Press" Association. ' Christchurch, MaTc'n 26. The oatina factory at Sydenham belonging to Messrs.' Langdown and Son, Ltd.. was badly damaged by fire this morning. Practically none of the stock was.saved. The plant was badly damaged. The origin of the fire is unknown. The men had been working until three o'clock this morning, and it is supposed that a spark set the place ou fire. The stock and buildings were fully , mured in the Union and Victoria offices for £5500. ,
