Owners who intend racing their horses at Pahiatua next week should bear in mind that acceptances closo ou Friday evening.
There will bo racing at Bulls on Wednesday and Thursday, at Timaru on. Thursday and Saturday, and at Oliinoniuri on Saturday.
At Bulls to-day the Rangitikci meeting will be opened at noon, at which hour tho Trial Plato (five furlongs) ' will be run. The beat known of the field arc Penniless, runner-up to' Calais in the Okoia Hack Weltor-Handicap at AVanganui, Golden Grafton, ruuncr-up iu similar events at the Tarauaki Cup mooting, ami Madam Kistori, who hails from Hnwera, mul was placed second to Hushmau iu the Juvenile Handicap at Waugauui. The latter is a three-year-old filly, aud a bit of an outlaw, but Tacing is quietening her down a lot. , : •
The Scott Memorial'is tho open sprint. It has attracted tho smallest field of the day, seven horses only being carded, and one of them—AHadineau—is also an acceptor in the Hack Handicap, run over tlie same distance. On his Napier and Mnstorton form, Downhani' can be written out. Lately an attempt has boon made to get Lady Middleton to go 'a middle distance, but she is back in sprints again, and "should do better there. Sho will want to be dressed in her. best to defeat Depredation, whose form since Christmas lias been most promising.
For the Carnarvon Hack Handicap, six furlongs, there are a dozen acceptors. Pararoa, who was amongst the money at Napier, may be the most heavily bullioned of the field, as he was regarded as unlucky to bo beaten at Greenmeadows.
Queen's Post should he a greatly lm'proved mare for the outing she bad at Dannevirke, and now that sho is (ruiet at the post backers may prefer her to any of the ■ others in the Hack Hurdles. L. Traill is to have the ulount on the half-sister to Loch Maben.
■ Of the Cup field, tho two top woights, Square Deal and Rewi Poto, have heen racing badly lately, but Tangihou showed form at AVoodville and AVanganui, and -is not by any means overburdened with Bst. • Princess Moutoa will be coupled with Master Moutoa, aud the bracket may be the best hacked, as either of the pair is'capable of running a very smart ten fnrlongs. When, at his best Master Moutoa is a very smart horse, and should-make light of 6st. 131b. Goldstream has just 'come in after a lengthy spell, and Byron will probably ho reserved for the Welter Handicap, run later in the -day.
In the Hack Welter Handicap > there are several useful horses engaged, Zola being top weight with Dst. 131b. This is a hig ourden for a three-year-old, but tlie Sweet Simon gelding can gallop fast, end has won at his last three starts. <Ho may he favourite with Dood, a winner at Hawera and Opunake, with Analogue also in demand.
Byron is meeting a very weak field in the Open Weltor Handicap, and with Deeley in the saddle he may carry most support. Nelson form points.to Rumania holding Stepney safe, but the latter will he a better horse.for the racing, and may Teverse positions with Mr. Whitney's horse.
In the Ngatiapa Hack Handicap, five furlongs, Carlysian, 75t..91b.. runner-up to Marimba at Masterton, will carry the confidence of a large ,army of backers. Several of the horses engaged'_ in ' Hi is event have, been accepted for in other races run earlier in the day.
To avoid clashing with other clubs, tlie Marlborough Racing Club has altered tho date of its autumn meeting to May 17 and 18. The programme is framed on much thesamo lines as last year, the Cup being worth 250 sovs., and tlie big handicap on the second day carries 175 sovs. as stake money. 'Entries close on April 20.
Owing to the absence of C. Emerson at Bulls, L. Wilson will have the mount on Peronilla in the Autumn Handicap at the 'South Canterbury meeting, and also on Forest Belle in the Rosewell-Han-dicap.
Red Book, who was recently purchased by a Christchurch sportsman, is to have his first race in his now owner's colours in the Gore Cup next week.' The top weight is- tlie Dunedin Cup winner, Rorke's Drift, Ost. 81b'., and Ecd Book has been awarded 7st. 21b.
Carbine's son, Wallace, is haying a great season as a.successful sire in Australia. Prior to the opening of the recent ViB.C. autumn fixture, the progeny of the grandson of Musket had won ,£18,593 m stakes, and now the stakes 1 secured by Amata (two) and Patrobas have to be added to this fine total. Amongst the runners in the Welcome Steeplechase at Gore next week will be the North Island-bred Grey Eciiown., The grey gelding is receiving weight from sevoral of the runners, a fact which, his trainer probably greatly appreciates. The Wairarapa Bacing Club has ordered from Messrs. Turnbull and Jones, Christchurch, a jockeys' uumber board of latest pattern, which will be erected in time for use at the club's autumn meeting on April 22 and 24.
