OPENING OF THE SEASON. :■ A windless, sunny afternoon made the success .of the opening of the JSliramar Golf Links for tie season assured, liere was a record crowd, in wilien there was a marked preponderance of ladies, and in the. big new club house there was room for everybody, it is scarcely surprising that the ladies should outnumber the men in sports crowds nowadays, and especially in any associated with tho Miramar kolt Club, for the club has sent /0 of its men players to the war. ' The president of the club (Sir. J. r. Firth) delivered a short speech of welcome to members and guests. He also made reference to the great war,' for Mr. Firth takes his obligation' to the nation in these troubled times very seriously. Largely 'through his enthusiasm and initiative patriotic funds in connection with the club were established months aRo, and already some £700 has heen subscribed by members.: Un Saturday Mr. Firth announced that he had a scheme in mind for further eifort by members. He said that if members could afford to play golf they could afford to make _ some contributions for patriotic objects. He proposed to submit his scheme to the committee, and he hoped t-hat the committee and members generally would supPort it- . ; Several competitions were held during the afternoon. Results were as fellow: — Ladies driving: Miss Gambrill, 169 yards, 1: Miss M. Wheeler, 165 yards, 2; Miss Docility, 156 yards, 3. • Men's driving: TV. T. Doughty, 256 yards, 1; F. P. Wilson, 236 s yards, 2; R. B. Kelly, 214 yards, 3. Ladies' approaching: Mrs. Mason, Miss M. Seed, and, Miss Phyllis Ward tied' at 6 for the two balls. Men's approach: G■ 0. Sutton. "A. Hawkins, B. L. Xaylor, and R. Yt T . Erkby all tied at. 6.
