CHARGE OF "BILKING" THE FERRY FARE. Murray Angus, a young man of about 20 years of age, was charged that he travelled on the .ferry .boat Duchess, from-'Day's Bay, on January 8, without a ticket with intent to defraud the Eastbourne Ferry Boat Company.' He pleaded "Not guilty," and was defended by Mr. D. M. Findlay. Mr. Buddie prosecuted on behalf of the company and said that, the present prosecution was being made on account of numerous rumours to the effect iliat many persons wore travelling, on these boats to and from Day's Bay without tickets. Mr. Findla.v. said he would admit. everything with tho exception of the "intent to defraud." Evidence was given by James Steven Day! manager of the ,-Ferry Company, to whom tho accused made the admission, of having travelled without a ticket. The evidence of the accused .was .then taken, he having come from Christchurch to answer the , charge. His contention was that he had been a monthly ticket-holder for December and that he had > delayed to take out his January ticket until his pay day. He admitted that he had said "monthly" to tho ticket collector, and lie did not make- any explanation, when lie could' not produce his ticket, because there wore do many people sitting round about him. Walter, Anderson was charged with driving a motor-car at, an excessive rate of speed round the corner cf Vivian and Taranaki Streets. He pleaded "Not guilty," and was defended by Mr. H. O'Leary. After police evidence had been led, defendant was found guilty and fined £2, with 9s. costs.
