EPIDEMIC AMONG HORSES
4PECULIAR PARALYSIS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, March 1. A serious epidomic involving mortality among liorses in _ North Canterbury is reported. The animals arc attacked li.y paralysis in the legs, then fall and ilo not rise again. Many of the ?vmptoms aro those of tetanus without the lockjaw. Tho disease is highly infectious, and animals should .bo ijolated wlion attacked. Government officials ate investigating the disease. [The Director of the Live Stock Division (Dr. Reakes) informed a reporter to-day that tho trouble is boinc investigatoil bv tho Department, and though final particulars are not yet available the iitfoimation so far reeoived indicates the cause to be not infections but niost likely dietetic. Dr. Reakos's advices do not iudicate any serious mortality—most of tho affected horses sunpi*' showing symptoms of some deMiigeluent of the nervous system, the ,°niirals not liaving full control of the movement of their legs.]
