THE MAORI FORCE
ALLEGED LOSS OF IDENTITY. A suggestion has been made that tho Maori Contingent, and tho Reinforcements that have followed it, has been merged with the New Zealand Main Body in such a way as to obliterate the identity of the Maori Force. The Dof'ence' Minister (Hon. James Allen) stated, yesterday that although the Maori Force did not operate at the lrout in exactly the same organisation with which it left here, it was not correct to suppose that the separate identity of the Maori Force was wholly lost. Maoris were not mixed up with other New Zealanders in the same platoons, but platoons of half-companies of Maoris were distributed about and regrouped into other coinpjiities. This j>tep had been taken by ueneral Godley because he had come to the conclusion that the Maoris would be better looked after, and would do more offectivo work under those conditions. Ueneral Godley had insisted that this chango was desirable, and General Godley must be the best judge as to tho conduct of affairs in the field.
