CONFERENCE OF ODDFELLOWS

SECESSION OF A LODGE.

By Telegraph—Press Associe.tion,

Auckland, February 23. In the course of his address as Provincial Grand Master, at the annual conference of the "Auckland branch of the Independent Order of Oddfellows (Manchester Unity). Mr. Smith announced that the secession of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge had been completed. Besides the sum of £15.380 2s. 6d. which had been received by tho Auckland l district through the secession of tho Fountain Lodge, the New Zealand branch of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows had also benefited considerably. The lodge had also forfeited the capital standing to its credit in the society's funeral fund, amounting to £1098. "It would l be seen, therefore." said Mr. Smith, "that the secession had cost the Fountain of Friendship Lodge dearly. The matter was now finally settled. Non-seceding members of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge had been allocated to various lodges in the district, the majority of the old and invalid members, being transferred to the Good Intent Lodge by the Grand Master and Board of Directors. The members of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge who_ remained'loyal to the Manchester Unity had reason to feel gratified! at the result. The whole of the capital which the lodge was compelled to pay on their account "under secession rules has been used for the purpose of redeeming the future sick and funeral and management fund contributions of those non-seceding members. The effect was that non-scceding members of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge have ao sick, funeral, or management contributions to pay for all time. They also retained their membership iii a world-wide organisation, and participated ill nlany advantages which such membership conferred." The Fountain of Friendship secession was the outcome of a proposal that the sick and funeral funds of lodges in the Auckland district be consolidated. The mattor of consolidation is still under consideration.
