JURY PAIL TO AGREE

DIVORCE CASE.

In the _ Supreme Court on Saturday, before His Honour Mr. Justice Chapman, hearing was concluded of the petition _in which .Harold Cecil Williams sought dissolution of his marriage with Lydia Caroline Williams on the ground of alleged misconduct with Daniel Malioney, liojse-trainer, of Christchurch. to. i. ivl. Wilford appeared, for the petitioner, while the respondent was represented by Mr. T. Neave, and the co-respondent by Mr.. A. W. Blair. The jury of twelve, empannelled for the hearing of the petition, retired at 4.40 p.m., and returned at 9.15 p.m. without having agreed upon a verdict. As there was no prospect of an agreement, His Honour discharged the jury. Mr. Wilford then appli«l for a new, hearing, and the question as to whether this should be taken this week or allowed to stand oved until next session is to be decided this morning. MAGISTRATE'S COURT BREACH OF LICENSING LAW. .Mr. 17. G. A. Cooper, S.M., delivered his reserved decision in the Magistrate's Court on Saturday in, the case in which Reginald John Davis was charged with selling liquor without a license at Porirua, and with selling liquor to a Native in a proclaimed area. Tho offences were dated November 23, 1915. His Worship considered that tho evidence justified convictions on both charges, and a fine of £10 was imposed in each case. Tho witnesses' expenses and other- costs amounted to £20 4s. 9d., so that the total penalty amounted to £40 4s. 9d. Mr. P.' W. Jackson, who appeared for tho defendant, asked that seven ' day: should bo allowed in which to find the money, and the Bench agreed to this course. Security for appeal was then fixed at seven, guineas in each case. OTHER CASES. Henry John Goulden, aged 56 ye/irs, was charged with obtaining 7s. 6d. from A. T. Bate by falsely representing himself as the agent of Lloyd's Publishing Co. On the application of Detec-tive-Sergeant M'llveney, the accused was remanded for a week. A returned soldier, named John Arthur Anderson, was "remanded until Wednesday next on a charge of carnal Jtnowledgo. Singh Shan, for drunkenness, was fined 205., with the option of going to gaol for three days. Several first-of-fending inebriates were also dealt with.
